Brenda Fassie — Vulindlela (1998)

Brenda Fassie recorded Vulindlela in 1997 for the album Memeza, and by 1998 it had become the loudest song in South Africa. Memeza was the country's best-selling album of the year, and Vulindlela was the track that carried it into every kasi tavern, every taxi rank and every SABC playlist at once. The lyric — a mother calling for the way to be opened for her son's bride — landed in a country that had just spent four years learning what a new beginning sounded like.

There was no YouTube, no data bundles and no share button. Vulindlela travelled on SABC 1, on Metro FM and Ukhozi FM, on cassette dubs sold outside Bree Street taxi rank in Johannesburg, and on VHS copies of the music video recorded off television in Soweto living rooms. That is exactly why it belongs in this archive: it is the first South African clip that ordinary Mzansi households copied and re-copied by hand, which is what virality looked like here before broadband.

MaBrrr died in 2004, and the song only grew. Every wedding from Limpopo to Cape Town still uses it as the entrance track. Every Heritage Day it climbs back up SA streaming charts. Every few years a new generation rediscovers it on TikTok and pushes it back into rotation. Counted across official uploads and mirrors, Vulindlela now sits above 35 million views in Mzansi — a South African record that never stopped being current.
