Babes Wodumo — Wololo ft. Mampintsha (2016)

Gqom was built in Durban's townships — Umlazi, KwaMashu, Inanda — on cracked software and shared on Bluetooth long before any label paid attention. Wololo was the record that carried it out of KZN. Babes Wodumo, then in her early twenties, delivered it with the bhampa dance attached, and that combination of a hard local beat with a copyable move is exactly what South African social media was waiting for.

2016 was the year SA Facebook groups and WhatsApp broadcast lists became the country's main distribution network. Wololo dance clips were filmed in school corridors in Durban, at car washes in Soweto, at varsity res in Bloemfontein and at stokvels in Bothaville, then compressed and forwarded until the video quality collapsed. Nobody needed the official upload; the copies were the point.

Wololo won Song of the Year, put gqom on international radio, and set the template that amapiano would perfect four years later: a South African sound plus a South African dance, distributed by South Africans, before any global platform noticed. Across Mzansi uploads it now sits above 48 million views.
