Limpopo Wedding Dance — The Entrance Mzansi Copied (2007)

In 2007 a wedding in Limpopo did what South African weddings had always done informally and made it a performance: the bridal party choreographed the entrance, the videographer filmed the whole thing, and the DVD went out to family. Those DVDs were duplicated in Polokwane, driven to Joburg, and copied again. Within a season the routine was being rehearsed at weddings in Soweto, Mthatha and Bothaville.

The timing matters. 2007 was peak Mxit in Mzansi and the first year that camera phones were common in South African households. A wedding clip could move province to province without television, without a record label, without a single data bundle in the modern sense. This is South African virality in its purest form: a family occasion, filmed by a local videographer, spread by people who knew the people in it.

The format never died — it industrialised. SA wedding entrance videos are now their own YouTube and TikTok category, complete with amapiano soundtracks, drone shots and rehearsal reels. Traced across re-uploads and compilation channels, the original Limpopo entrance and its direct copies clear 18 million views in Mzansi, and every SA bridal party still measures itself against it.
