When did it go viral?
PSY released Gangnam Style on 15 July 2012 as a satire of the wealthy Gangnam district in Seoul. The joke was local and specific. The horse-riding dance was not. Within six weeks the video was the most shared clip on the planet, helped by celebrity reposts and by the fact that the choreography could be copied badly and still look correct.
In December 2012 it became the first YouTube video to pass one billion views. Two years later it broke the platform's 32-bit view counter, forcing Google to move to a 64-bit integer. Very few pieces of culture have ever caused an engineering change of that kind.
How many views when it peaked?
The video collected roughly 804 million views in its first 100 days and reached one billion inside five months. By August 2026 the official upload sits above 5.5 billion views, which places it permanently inside the top handful of videos ever published.
Those numbers were not driven by a single country. Gangnam Style was the first genuinely global viral hit of the smartphone era, and it landed at the exact moment when Facebook video sharing and BlackBerry Messenger broadcast lists became normal in South Africa.
Why did South Africa love it?
South Africa embraced it immediately because the dance was participatory. Matric dances in 2012 had a Gangnam Style moment. So did school assemblies, church youth days, taxi ranks and stokvel parties. Radio stations from Metro FM to community stations in the Free State played it into the ground.
There is also a local angle that Mzansi understood instantly. PSY was mocking rich people who pretend. That is a well-established South African comedy tradition, from kwaito lyrics to township stand-up, so the satire did not need explaining even though the language did.
Where is it now? (2026 status)
PSY still performs the song and runs his own label in South Korea. The video remains publicly available and continues to gain millions of views every month, mostly from viewers who were too young to see it the first time.
In 2026 Gangnam Style functions as a historical marker. It is the line between the era when a video could be big in one country and the era when a video could be big everywhere at once within a fortnight.
