When did it go viral?

In September 2007, after Britney Spears was widely ridiculed for a televised awards performance, Chris Crocker recorded a video in front of a white sheet, crying and shouting at the audience to stop attacking her. It was uploaded the same night.

It passed two million views within a day and roughly fifty million within a week, making it one of the fastest-spreading uploads of the entire decade. Television news covered it, comedians parodied it, and it turned Crocker into a national punchline in the United States overnight.

How many views when it peaked?

The original and its mirrors together exceeded fifty million views in the first month, which in 2007 terms was extraordinary. There was no algorithm pushing it. People sent it to each other on purpose.

It is now cited as one of the earliest examples of a viral video where the reaction to the video became far larger than the video, and where the creator absorbed serious personal harassment as a result.

Why did South Africa love it?

South Africans first met the clip as comedy, forwarded through email and MXit like everything else in that era, with the catchphrase repeated in classrooms by people who had never seen the full two minutes.

The second reading landed harder here. Mzansi has watched its own public figures, especially women in music and television, taken apart by tabloids and later by social media pile-ons. The point Crocker was making about a crowd turning on a person for entertainment is a very familiar South African story.

Where is it now? (2026 status)

After the Free Britney movement and the end of Spears's conservatorship in 2021, the video was widely revisited and Crocker received public apologies from many of the people who had mocked him. He now works as a musician and filmmaker.

As of 2026 Leave Britney Alone is treated as one of the most misjudged viral videos in history. It was correct at the time and it took the internet fourteen years to catch up.
